UK: China will offer fig leaves to US exposed by NSA leaker - Assange

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange sounded off on Tuesday about the fate of National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden. Speaking from the Ecuadorean Embassy in London, where Assange is eluding extradition for charges of sex offences, Assange said China would determine the fate of Snowden, who remains in Hong Kong.

On Sunday, Snowden, 29, a former consultant of Booz Allen Hamilton ignited global debate after he leaked information on a vast US government blueprint for electronic surveillance. Before the interview, one of Hong-Kong's top pro-China politicians, Regina Ip, said Hong Kong was not a safe harbour for the defence contractor, and the government would be obliged to honour the extradition treaty signed with the United States in 1997.

Assange said: "It is the nature of the Chinese in their geopolitics not really make to make showy manoeuvres and in fact to try and suppress those people who are seen to be dissenting and to offer fig leaves. I would expect that by the end of the round this week the Chinese will promise their assistance to the United States in the possible extradition of Mr Snowden. China was the first country to censor WikiLeaks back in 2007, their policies have varied a bit since that time, but until this present day, the great fire wall of China tries to blockade WikiLeaks."

Assange spoke ahead of Ecuador's Socialist Prime Minister Ricardo Patino's London visit on Sunday, marking one year since Assange sought political asylum in the Ecuadorean Embassy.
