UK: Police and G8 protesters clash in central London

Central London was the scene of running clashes between police and anti-capitalist demonstrators on Tuesday. Activists marched through the British capital's West End at the start of StopG8's 'Carnival Against Capitalism', ahead of next week's G8 summit.

Carrying placards with messages that bashed banks, prisons, and borders, the demonstrators beat drums and blew whistles as they made their way through Oxford Street, Regent Street and Piccadilly Circus. Police were seen detaining and arresting a number of people, sometimes following violent struggle. The protests were not planned in coordination with authorities.

Riot police also detained several protesters following a raid of a central London property. According to the police, people in the building may have been planning to use weapons to cause criminal damage and engage in violent disorder.

The Carnival Against Capitalism is being held ahead of the meeting of the Group of Eight most powerful economies in Northern Ireland. StopG8 promises on its website to "point out the hiding places of power, and take back the heart of our city for a day." It has also scheduled a "street party" for early Tuesday evening.

Global leaders will gather at the Lough Erne hotel and golf resort on June 17-18 for the 39th G8 summit. Security has been tightened near the resort, and in Belfast, ahead of expected protests.
