Argentina: Russian FM talks money and tech in Buenos Aires
The Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met his Argentine counterpart Hector Timerman on Monday in an official visit to Buenos Aires. The visit is intended to expand bilateral cooperation between the two countries. Lavrov and Timerman discussed issues of cooperation in the fields of nuclear energy, hydropower production, space, investment, and economics.
According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, the establishment of a strategic partnership began during the 2008 visit to Moscow by Argentinean President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner and grew when Russian President Vladimir Putin officially visited the Argentine capital in 2010.
Lavrov will also visit Rio de Janeiro, where he will have a meeting with Brazilian counterpart Antonio Patriota. The dialogues will focus on Russia's and Brazil's cooperation in BRICS, the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and the United Nations (UN).
Lavrov spoke of the joint Argentine-Russian desire to change the international monetary system, saying: "We agreed to intensify our cooperation on the reform of the international monetary, financial and trading systems, including in the context of the preparations for the next meeting in the framework of the Doha Round of the WTO summit and the G-20, which will be held in September in St. Petersburg."
Focusing on the economic aspect of relations, Lavrov said: "We are united in the necessity to greatly increase the volume of trade, which reached significant levels, but we want this to increase. On both sides, there is a significant interest in a sharp increase in investment, especially in the high-tech sector."
Addressing the ongoing territorial dispute between Great Britain and Argentina related to island territory off the Argentine coast, Lavrov said: "The statement also confirmed our position in support of direct negotiations between Argentina and Great Britain on a final peaceful settlement of the Malvinas Islands problem."
