Syria: Army retakes 'last Qusayr opposition stronghold'

On Saturday government troops retook control of Al Buwaydah Al Sharqiyah (Eastern Al Buwaydah), and what was believed to be the last stronghold of armed opposition in the Al Qusayr area, Homs Province, Syria. Al Buwaydah is a village located 13 kilometres to the northeast of Al Qusayr.

After gaining full control over the former opposition stronghold in Al Qusayr, the Syrian army continues to advance and regain more areas.

Soldiers and sappers of the government's army have been deployed in the village to look for bombs, mines and shells left by the opposition before they left the area. The majority of Al Buwaydah's infrastructure was used by opposition forces as firing positions, weapon caches and field hospitals. One of the field hospitals was discovered in a school building.

The Al Qusayr region is an enclave near the border with Lebanon, which was used by both opposition and government forces as a weapons and supplies route. The latest development in the offensive will allow the government to keep a passage open between the Bekaa Valley and the Mediterranean coast for the Syrian army. However, many international observers believe that this military gain will determine the growing role of the Lebanese political movement Hezbollah in the conflict, which has given armed support to the government. It also assures control over the main routes that connect this region with the capital, Damascus.

The Syrian conflict has in recent months spread beyond the borders, with Israel and Lebanese Hezbollah launching operations in Syria. Syria has recently procured arms from Russia, which Russia says will stabilise the conflict by providing a balance of power in the region and cooling down "hot-headed" interventionists.
