UK: 45,000 rally to demand end to hunger ahead of G8 summit

Famous actor Ewan McGregor, Microsoft founder Bill Gates, film director Danny Boyle and tens of thousands of people joined an anti-hunger demonstration in London's Hyde Park Saturday. Hosted by lobby group Enough Food For Everyone IF. Organisers said around 45,000 people attended the charity event.

The rally marked nine days until the leaders of the world's eight wealthiest nations, known as the Group of Eight (G8), meet for a summit in Northern Ireland. The IF coalition, which includes Save the Children, Oxfam, Unicef and Christian Aid, is calling on the G8 group of industrialised countries to increase funding to tackle malnutrition and stunted growth.

A video message from recently retired football star David Beckham urged attendees to send messages to British Prime Minister David Cameron on the microblogging site Twitter that "the time for the G8 to act is now". Former Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams lead the crowd in one-minute moment of silence for the millions who have died of hunger. Other prominent attendees included actor David Harewood, media personality Myleene Klass and Welsh television presenter Gethin Jones. As part of the rally, there was a visual petition of 250,000 spinning flowers, featuring two million petals representing the children who die of malnutrition every year.

David Harewood, British actor of 'Homeland' fame said, "We have got some huge corporations at the moment making billions every year, billions and billions every year. And somehow they are managing to do that by being very creative with their tax, with the tax systems. Now all we are saying is, we are not trying to stop them making money, is ask them if they perhaps plough some of that money back into the communities in which they are building these factories."
