Jordan: Jordanians demand Israel release hunger strikers
Family members of Jordanian prisoners in Israel and various supporters gathered in the centre of Amman on June 5, to urge the Jordanian government to represent prisoners and apply pressure on the Israeli Government in meeting the prisoners' demands.
Eight Jordanian prisoners held in Israeli jails are currently on a hunger strike, protesting against in-humane conditions in prison. Inmates began their strike on May 2, demanding permission for regular family visits and regular health checks. Five Jordanian prisoners have also joined the strikers on Thursday to request their transfer to Jordanian prisons to serve their remaining time.
The mother of one of the inmates on strike asks the Jordanian Government to act in the current situation: "We are asking the Jordanian government to intervene on behalf of the prisoners and to negotiate their release immediately. I am almost 70, and I am still waiting for my son, who in 12 years of being imprisoned I have only been able to visit him twice. Is there any place in the world where something happens like what goes on in Jordan?"
According to figures of the National Committee for Prisoners in Israel, there are more than 600 Palestinians and 26 Jordanians behind bars in Israel. Their future is a key topic in need of a solution before Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations can progress.
