Russia: Holy smoke! Russians take their cigarettes outside
From June 1 new smoking laws came into effect in Russia, as smoking is no longer allowed in public places, schools, universities, buildings of state authorities, regional public transport, railway stations, airports, elevators and staircases. The law was signed by Russia's President Vladimir Putin on February 25.
The new legislation sees smoking prohibited within 15 metres of entrances to stations. It has also been banned in children's playgrounds and beaches from June 1. Recent statistics suggest that Russia has one of the highest smoking rates in the world, with over four in 10 Russians considered smokers.
The new smoking legislation will also see restrictions on tobacco advertising, and a ban on depiction of smoking in films, TV shows and stage plays.
