Germany: Solidarity, food and water for kettled-in 'Blockupiers'
Residents of the building next to kettled-in 'Blockupy' protesters began providing food and water Saturday when police refused to let paramedics and activists out of the kettle. They had planned a rally in front of the European Central Bank (ECB) to be the culmination of their protest, but police stopped the plan going ahead by dividing them into three groups using kettles and keeping them off the planned course.
Four hundred people took to the streets of Cologne to show their solidarity for the Blockupiers, and in cities outside of Germany people gathered outside German foreign missions in their support.
When the police threatened to remove the activists from the street forcefully, several members of parliament stood between police and activists in protest.
When the police finally broke through to protester lines, the members of Parliament stood up and were among the first to be removed with police escort.
Saturday marked Blockupy's final day of protest, with barbed wire fences laid down and water cannons prepped in case of more clashes. Blockupy demonstrators began protesting on Friday near the ECB, in front of the Deutsche Bank headquarters and at the city's at the airport, with the police estimating around 1,400 people were present.
