Germany: Police turn the tables and block the Blockupiers

Tensions continue to brew between police and protesters in Frankurt as police kept thousands of Blockupy demonstrators from following along their court-approved path during their anti-capitalistic march across the city. They had planned a rally in front of the European Central Bank (ECB) to be the culmination of their protest, but police foiled their plans by diving them into three groups using kettles and keeping them off the planned course.

This will mark Blockupy's final day of protest, and in advance of the potential clashes police laid down barbed wire fences last night and prepared water guns to be used on protesters if necessary. Blockupy demonstrators previously protested on Friday near the ECB and in front of the Deutsche Bank at the airport, with the police estimating the number of people who were present to be about 1,400. Blockupy members began setting up camp in Frankfurt days before on Wednesday.

The protest is concentrated against the Troika composed of the ECB, International Money Fund and the European Union Commission and the austerity packages it has supported. Troika members from around the world flew to Frankfurt to participate in Blockupy, a movement whose name comes from a combination of the English word "to block" and the word "occupy", and which was inspired by the Occupy Wall Street movement carried out in America in 2011.

Organisations involved in enacting Blockupy include the Partei der Linke, the globalization critic Organisation Attac and the labour union ver.di.
