Germany: Italy sends Libyan refugees off with €500 in their pockets
After fleeing Libya in 2011 and spending two years in an Italian camp, refugees from the north African country were recently given documents from the Italian government recognising their refugee status giving them permission travel to northern Europe. The refugees, some of whom were given €500 ($650), were told to leave the country.
Some went to France, Switzerland and Scandinavia. Others went to German cities, such Berlin and Hamburg. Those staying in Hamburg have not been granted shelter by authorities and, therefore have had to sleep on the streets.
Since April 15 the group has been camping outside the main railway station of the northern German city. The group known as 'Lampedusa in Hamburg' is made up of refugees who fled Libya during the NATO led war which toppled Muammer Gaddafi in October 2011.
One Libyan refugee, who was born in Ghana said about the limited financial help they were given: "We should forget about the money. Could you imagine in Europe ... to rent a house ... how much? And you cannot eat. Can you sleep without eating? [...] A dog cannot sleep outside. Why is that human being will sleep outside?" He continued, "This is not a problem Italy can solve by itself. All EU countries are needed to solve this problem. Because law was made by man, not man was made by law."
The refugees have been trying to speak to Hamburg's mayor Olaf Scholz about there situation. However without success so far.
