Syria: Opposition loses more ground in Damascus

Fierce fighting continues in the Jobar suburb of Damascus on Thursday as the Syrian army retakes two key roundabouts and their immediate surrounding areas. The Jobar suburb is of particular importance because whoever controls it has control of the important northern entrance into Damascus. The battle resulted in the retaking of the strategic areas by the Syrian army.

The Jobar suburb, which has a large Christian population which has reported persecution at the hands of some militant groups fighting against the Syrian government, is located near the strategically important northern entrance to Damascus, close to the road to Homs.

Jobar is also home to a 2,000 year old synagogue, the holiest Jewish site in the country, which came under attack at the beginning of April this year.

An army commander speaking from the battlefield said: "The army has continued its operations after retaking the Parliament roundabout and towards the Manashr roundabout as you can see. The roundabouts are under the Army's control and we have freed the surrounding area from the terrorists. The army is continuing its work towards the Harmaleh tunnel and the cleansing of Jobar."
