Kazakhstan: New ISS crew prepares for life in space

The new International Space Station crew arrived at the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on Monday to train for their spacebound visit. On Tuesday, a Russian-built Soyuz TMA-09M spacecraft will launch the new crew to the International Space Station, or ISS. The three new crew members greeted fans, exercised, and performed training activities in models of the ISS.

The Soyuz TMA-09M spacecraft reached the launch pad at Baikonur, which is leased to the Russian government, on Monday by train. It is expected to bring three new crewmembers to the ISS: Commander Fyodor Yurchikhin and Flight Engineers Karen Nyberg and Luca Parmitano. Yurchikhin is a seasoned Russian space travel veteran, having participated in Expedition 15 in 2007, Expedition 24/25 in 2010, and flying aboard space shuttle Atlantis as part of NASA's STS-112 mission in 2002. Nyberg, a NASA astronaut, last travelled to the ISS in 2008 as part of STS-124. Parmitano is an Italian astronaut from the European Space Agency who will be making his first trip to space.

The Soyuz spacecraft is expected to dock with the ISS about six hours after it launches. Once on board the ISS, the new crew will join current ISS residents Pavel Vinogradov, Alexander Misurkin and Chris Cassidy. The new crew is expected to remain on board until mid-November, conducting a variety of scientific experiments and making repairs to the 15-year-old space station.

Launched in 1998, the International Space Station is the largest human-made object in orbit, capable of housing a crew of up to six for extended periods of time. It is a joint project among five participating space agencies: Roscosmos, NASA, the European Space Agency, the Canadian Space Agency, and the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency.
