Syria: Deadly clashes as army attempts to break opposition stronghold WARNING: GRAPHIC CONTENT
Clashes between Syrian government forces and opposition militants in the town of Darayya continue as the Syrian army attempts to capture and control the strategically situated opposition stronghold. Militants have been using the town as a base for attacks on the southern parts of Syria's capital Damascus. Footage from Thursday shows the deadliness of the fighting.
Tactics used by Syrian soldiers included surprise attack operations in the rural areas of the city held by insurgents, in particular attacks on the Damascus-based Ahfad Al Rasoul Brigade, also known as the 'Grandchildren of the Prophet Brigade', which is the most active faction of the Free Syrian Army in the countryside south of Damascus. The Ahfad Al Rasoul Brigade claimed responsibility via Facbook for the September 2 bombing of a Syrian army general staff building which killed at least 330 people.
Vehicles mounted with mortar launchers that are thought to have been used by insurgents to launch attacks on Damascus from Darayya were destroyed. Syrian army forces also confiscated medium and light weapons, including RPGs. The tunnels opposition militants used to travel through were also exposed.
The Syrian civil war has raged since 2011. The United Nations estimated in May that the death toll has reached over 80,000.
