Russia: Fuel tank blast leaking poisonous chemical gas
Over 50 carriages of a 71-car-long cargo train transporting chemicals, fuel and construction materials derailed in Belaya Kalitva, in Russia's Rostov region on Thursday. Around 10 carriages set ablaze and there were reports of a chemical leak in one of the carriages. Specialist teams and emergency response units measured the levels of a gas on the crash site and concluded that levels are within safe range.
29 people were injured in fire and one person is still missing. Around 3000 were evacuated from the nearby area as a precautionary measure due to suspected chemical hazard. 11 people were admitted to hospital, including the train driver. The evacuated were temporarily housed in a shelter in the local community building.
Nearby houses were damaged in the blast and most of windows were shattered by the shockwave. Blaze witnesses reported that an explosion was so strong, that fragmentation and shrapnel reached the sixth storey of nearby buildings. Russian emergency services managed to localise fire on Thursday late afternoon, but will stay in the site to clean up the accident area for at least another two days. A criminal case was launched on the basis of transporting in violation of safety rules.
