Syria: Exclusive: Syrian Electronic Army take responsibility for hacking AP

The Syrian Electronic Army, a group of hackers behind the attack on various western media websites, has officially taken responsibility for the hacking of the Twitter account of American news agency Associated Press (AP) April 23, which they used to claim there had been an explosion in the White House.

Ruptly has been provided with proof that the person appearing in this video is indeed a member of the Syrian Electronic Army. They said in the statement: "Our aim is through the electronic medium to reveal the truth and to uncover the false propaganda of the enemies of our beloved Syria." They called the hack upon AP their "greatest and most important operation yet". They go on to state that they are not affiliated with any governmental body, "We are a group that have come together out of love for our nation".

The Syrian Electronic Army have a growing hitlist, having recently hacked the Guardian, the BBC and most recently E! Online's twitter account where they tweeted: "Exclusive: Justin Bieber to E! Online: I'm a gay" before taking responsibility for the hack - saying "fans of @justinbieber, you have been trolled". They also tweeted that Angelina Jolie blamed Jordan for Syrian refugee conditions. The statement ends with the hackers speaking in victorious terms: "We know and we believe that success is near if God wills it, as god is with us. In the name of Syria and the great Syrian people we broadcast this official statement in the name of the Syrian Electronic Army. This is only the beginning. Long may you all live and long live Syria."
