Venezuela: Brawl breaks out in Venezuelan parliament

Venezuelan parliament was interrupted by fistfights between government and opposition members on Tuesday, leaving 11 injured at the National Assembly in Caracas. The government had just passed legislature which banned opposition members from speaking unless they recognised Nicolas Maduro as president.

An assembly member present at the event told media that the conflict started when opposition members shouted "fascist" and displayed a banner with the words "parliamentary coup" written on it during the assembly. Government members say the violence was initiated by the opposition members.

Politics in Venezuela have been marked by unrest ever since the March death of the socialist leader Hugo Chavez, who governed the country for 14 years. Chavez chose Maduro as his successor and Maduro successfully defeated Henrique Capriles in the election on April 14 by 1.5 percentage points.

Capriles has since claimed that the controversial election was falsified and refuses to recognise Maduro as president. The day after the vote, eight people died in violent protests.
