Russia: Day of Spring and Labour draws ten of thousands to Moscow's streets
Police estimate that ninety thousand Russians celebrated the Day of Spring and Labour by marching in a procession throughout Moscow on Wednesday. Organised by the Federation of Independent Trade Unions, the procession brought out trade union representatives, families, and plenty of balloons and flowers.
Participants marched through Arbatskaya and Lubyanskaya square and on the central Moscow streets Tverskaya, Mokhovaya, Vozdvizhenka, Okhotny Ryad, and Teatralny Proezd. Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin attended the event along with members of United Russia and the All-Russia People's Front.
In October 2012 Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev extended the Day of Spring and Labour holiday to five days, meaning this year Russians will get to enjoy a public holiday from Wednesday through to Sunday.
