Russia: Pussy Riot member requests parole
A Moscow court heard the parole request of feminist punk-rock band 'Pussy Riot' member, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova Friday.
Tolokonnikova explained to the court, "I think I have spent enough time in prison to understand what it is about and I think that 6 months is just the right time to refrain from committing any further offences that may put me back behind bars. I believe that the sanctions that have been imposed on me have nothing to with this trial that is about granting me parole."
The musician, who is serving a two year prison sentence, participated last year in the 'punk prayer' performed by the band in Moscow's Christ the Saviour Cathedral. All three pussy riot members were found guilty of hooliganism motivated by religious hatred. Tolokonnikova was transferred to a prison hospital, nearby the women's penal colony, after experiencing severe headaches. In December, Tolokonnikova underwent a medical investigation which concluded that the cause of her headaches could be 'very serious', her lawyer said in a statement.
When arrested, Tolokonnikova was in her final year at Moscow State University, Russia's most prestigious university, studying philosophy.
