Serbia: Serbs rally against normalisation with Kosovo

Some 20,000 ethnic Serbs took to the streets of Kosovska Mitrovica, in northern Kosovo, Monday in a show of anger against Serbia's decision to normalise relations with the ethnic Albanian-led government's authority of Kosovo. Serbs made it clear that they would not accept the EU-backed deal, which would place some 50,000 ethnic Serbs under the laws of Pristina. The deal does, however, allow Serbs to police and manage the territory, so long as it is in accordance with the laws of the Kosovan government.

Milovic Dragisa, mayor of Serbian municipality Zvevcan, said at the protest that the Belgrade negotiating team had decided for the territory's Serbs without consultation. Speakers from the podium called for a referendum, while others called for the resignation of President of Serbia, Tomislav Nikolic.

The protest which began at 12.00 started with the Serbian national anthem. Protesters held the national flag of Serbia and held banners and placards reading "We do not want Kosovo's seal", "No to Brussels agreement" and "We don't want Kosovan press" .

The protest was staged by the Serb majority municipalities Kosovska Mitrovica, Zubin Potok, Zvecan and Leposavic.

The European Commission recommended on Monday opening negotiations on Serbia and Kosovo's entry into the EU, following the deal to normalise ties.
