Venezuela: Maduro welcomes election victory with supporters

Hundreds of thousands of Chavistas who voted Nicolas Maduro into power on Sunday filled the streets outside the Miraflores presidential palace, Caracas to celebrate his victory. Fireworks burst in the sky over the presidential palace as the former Vice President delivered his acceptance speech to a vast crowd of supporters.

With 7,505,338 votes, just under a one percent lead over opposition candidate Henrique Capriles, Maduro branded the triumph electorally fair and constitutional.

"And I said to him, Capriles, I told you, and I said it publicly: If I lose by one vote, I will step down tomorrow," said Maduro. "But it is not that way. I have won with almost 300,000 votes. It is the decision of the people."

During a press conference, Capriles said he refused to recognise the result until an audit of over 3,000 irregularities he said his party had identified had been carried out.

In a post to Twitter, he said: "The one who has been defeated is you and everything you represent," in reference to Maduro and the Bolivarian socialist project initiated by his predecessor, the late Hugo Chavez.

Maduro previously served as Foreign Minister and Vice-President, and was the former leader's handpicked successor after his death in March following a lengthy battle with cancer.

Maduro immediately accepted the request for an audit.

"So they want to have an audit? We welcome the audit! Let them have whatever audit that they want done," he said. "We trust in the National Electoral Commission of Venezuela. Welcome the audit!"

National Electoral Commission (CNE) Rector Vicente Diaz immediately requested an audit of the results. "This tight result has lead me to request that the CNE conduct a citizens' audit of 100 percent of the ballot boxes. The country needs it," he said.

Venezuela uses an electronic voting system, leading former US President Jimmy Carter to call the country's elections "the best in the world". Latin American inter-governmental union Unasur called for the results of the election to be respected.

Just as polling stations were closing, Twitter accounts belonging to Maduro and various government agencies were hacked by the LulzSec group. The presidents of both Argentina and Ecuador congratulated Maduro on his victory using the social network.
