Venezuela: "Best in the world" election process continues
Venezuelans headed to the polls on Sunday to choose their future President, with interim president Nicolas Maduro currently leading in the polls against the main opposition contender, Henrique Capriles.
Approximately 19 million Venezuelans are expected to vote and polls will remain open until approximately 4:30 pm local time (20:30 GMT).
The winner will be inaugurated on April 19 and will run the country, which has some of the world's largest oil reserves, until 2019.
A poll by Venezuela's GIS XXI indicated that Maduro will win with a majority vote of 55.3 %. Maduro has been interim president since former President Hugo Chavez died last month.
The nation is currently using an electronic voting system with a total of 39,322 voting machines. More than 100,000 Venezuelans living outside the country are also voting through their embassies or consulates. Former US President Jimmy Carter, who has monitored elections across the world, in 2012 said: "the election process in Venezuela is the best in the world".
