Spain: Thousands of Spaniards celebrate the second republic

Thousands of Spaniards gathered from Plaza de Cibeles to Puerta del Sol, Madrid, on Sunday to celebrate the anniversary of Spain's second republic.

The annual event was busier than previous years in the wake of a corruption scandal that has rocked the royal family.

King Juan Carlos' youngest daughter, Infanta Cristina, is facing charges over allegations that her husband of 16 years, Inaki Urdangarin, has embezzled millions of euros of taxpayer's money.

The last opinion poll on the popularity of King Juan Carlos, held over a year ago, put his approval ratings at below 50 per cent.

A majority of 18-29 year-olds said in a recent poll, they want Spain to become a republic once again.

One Spanish man at the Plaza explained a reason behind this change in popularity for the Monarchy. "What is in decline is the system that allows their existence, the capitalist system of large financial oligarchies."

A Spaniard man celebrating the anniversary of the Second Spanish Republic anniversary April 14 says: "The third republic is in the hands of young people, that is clear. We just have to pass them the baton."

The second republic was proclaimed on April 14, 1931, and lasted until General Francisco Franco defeated republican forces in the bloody three year Spanish Civil War that claimed hundreds of thousands of lives.
