Nicaragua: Taiwanese black belt cadets get their kicks in Nicaragua
Some 800 cadets from the Taiwanese Naval Forces docked in Nicaragua on Thursday for a series of military instruction drills with their Central American counterparts. During their stay, senior-year cadets from the Navy Academy of Taiwan will share experiences and show their martial arts skills, as well as showcase their culture and music.
The members of the Taiwanese Navy anchored in the Pacific port of Corinto, about 150 km from the capital Managua. After Nicaragua, the three-ship fleet will visit other ports in Central America and the Caribbean.
Moises Omar Halleslevens Acevedo, Vice-President of Nicaragua, said that both countries "have a very close relationship, I'd say a pretty big one. A visit like this one is part of the strengthening relationship that exists between that brother people, that brother government and the government and people of Nicaragua."
Taiwan is the second largest Asian destination for Nicaraguan exports after Japan. In 2012, the Central American country exported goods to Taipei for over $46.7m (€35.7m).
