Turkey: Protest gets violent outside "Ergenekon" trial compound
Police used tear gas, pepper spray and water cannons on civilians protesting at the compound where the "Ergenekon" trial is taking place on Monday.
Demonstrators started to break down security barriers around the Silivri prison compound, where already since early Monday morning thousands had arrived by bus to rally in support for the prisoners and show their solidarity.
Unable to resist successive rounds of tear gas, protesters were pushed again back behind barricades, where they continued to shout for the government to resign and chanted: "We are the soldiers of Mustafa Kemal."
The "Ergenekon" court trials began in October 2008 and are for suspects accused of attempting a coup against the Turkish government.
