Mexico: Teachers defiant at reforms, head to the barricades

Thousands of members of the Mexican National Education Workers Union, the SNTE, marched on the streets of Mexico City, Thursday. They were protesting against the education and labour reforms that came into force February, 25. The reforms that are meant to address corruption within the teaching profession, protesters feel go too far in limiting union power. Around 150 police closed the road leading to the Secretariat of the Interior, blocking the marcher's destination. Protesters wanted their grievances to be heard by ministers who were holding a meeting in the building, led by deputy secretary Luis Enrique Miranda.

The reforms brought in by President Enrique Pena Nieto were aimed at stemming corruption within Mexican teaching institutions. Nieto, who campaigned on the basis of fighting corruption, holds that the SNTE had too much control over the country's educational system. Before the reforms, teaching positions could be traded, bartered for goods or inherited - even in the absence of teaching qualifications.

The reform bill was preceded by the arrest of Elba Esther Gordillo, known as "La Maestra" ("The Teacher"). Gordillo, a was a longtime leader of SNTE, was charged with misappropriation of funds. She is suspected of stealing over $150 million (€116 million).
