Russia: Opposition leader Udaltsov house arrest extended

The house arrest of Russian opposition leader Sergei Udaltsov has been extended until at least August 6, Moscow's Basmanny Court ruled Monday. The left-wing lawyer and vocal critic of President Vladimir Putin has been under house arrest for his role in helping lead violent anti-Putin protests in May 2012.

Udaltsov had previously been scheduled to be released April 6. Demonstrations in Moscow by Udaltsov's Left Front and Vanguard of Red Youth political groups in support of Udaltsov during his confinement have frequently resulted in clashes with police. A March 30 rally in Moscow's iconic Red Square led to the detainment of 13 out of 30 activists taking part.

Udaltsov was initially ordered in October 2012 not to leave Moscow. On Feb. 8, investigators requested to place him under house arrest over allegations that he violated the former ruling.

Udaltsov is also being probed after the controversial October 2012 documentary "Anatomy of A Protest 2" alleged Udaltsov and his supporters planned to overthrow the Russian government using funding from Georgian political leaders.
