Russia: Putin backs Ekaterinburg's World Expo bid

Russian President Vladimir Putin met with officials in Sochi Thursday to voice Russia's support for Ekaterinburg's bid to host the World Expo 2020. The proposed theme of the Ekaterinburg Expo is "The Global Mind. The Future of Globalization and its Impact on the World." Putin discussed the matter with members of the Bureau of International Exhibitions (BIE) which oversees the bidding process for world expos.

Following talks with BIE Secretary General Vicente Loscertales and BIE Committee Chairperson Stein Christensen, Putin pledged Russian state support for Ekaterinburg should it win the bid. President Putin stated, "If you and other participants of the process will decide to choose Ekaterinburg, we are going to provide additional support to develop the city and infrastructure," said the Russian president.

Officials behind Ekaterinburg's bid say the city -- Russia's fourth-largest -- is becoming a centre for science, learning and new ideas. It will also be one of the venues for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

World Expos are large-scale public exhibitions held once every five years at different locations around the world. Expo 2015 will be held in Milan, Italy, following the last Expo, in Shanghai, China, in 2010. Participating countries set up national pavilions, many costing in excess of $10 million. They are each built in a style that reflects the nation's culture, and showcase the achievements of the individual countries.
