Qatar: Syrian opposition takes official seat at Arab League summit
The Syrian seat at the latest Arab League summit has been taken by the war-torn country's opposition National Coalition.
Qatari emir Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani opened the summit in Doha, Qatar, on Tuesday, inviting Syrian National Coalition president Moaz al-Khatib to assume the official Syria seat. The Damascus-based government of Bashar al-Assad denounced the League's decision.
The Arab League suspended al-Assad's government from its meetings in November 2011, accusing it of the suppression of opposition groups in Syria.
Syria is embroiled in a fierce civil war, with forces loyal to al-Assad fighting groups opposed to his rule. So far, tens of thousands have died in the conflict, and many hundreds of thousands have been displaced.
Aside from the Syria situation, delegates at the Arab League meeting are expected to discuss peace talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban.
