Germany: Police Helicopters crash at Berlin Olympic Stadium
One police officer is reported dead and four others seriously injured after two federal police helicopters crashed during a training exercise above Berlin's Olympic Stadium earlier on Thursday morning. The helicopters were approximately 100 feet from the ground during the collision amidst a snowstorm.
The helicoptors, said to be carrying between 20 to 25 officers each, are thought to have crashed after their rotors became entangled. Major media outlets report that fireworks were being set off to simulate riot conditions as part of the anti-football hooliganism exercise.
A reporter at the scene is quoted assaying, '...There was blood and wreckage everywhere.' German Federal Minister of the Interior Hans-Peter Friedrich has called for an investigtion of the crash.
The Olympic Stadium, which held the 1936 Olympics and the 2006 Football World Cup, is located in the west of the German capital. It is now home to the Hertha Berlin Bundesliga football club.
