Greece: Retired citizens march against austerity measures
Some ten thousand retired civil service men and women, including army personnel, security forces, police and firefighters, took to Aristotelous Square in Thessaloniki on Wednesday to protest cuts in pensions and wages.
Retired civil service workers held up banners and posters against the government's proposed plan to cut their pensions.
The pensioners were joined by firefighters and civil servants in Greece' second largest city chanting along with the protesters outside the local government offices of the Ministry of Macedonia and Thrace.
A delegation of uniformed civil servants met with the Minister of Macedonia and Thrace, Theodoros Karaoglou, to present their demands for better wages and more staff. The minister promised that their demands will be presented to the Greek Prime Minister, Antonis Samaras.
