Argentina: Mourners gather outside Venezuelan Embassy to honour Chavez
On early Wednesday, dozens of people gathered at the footsteps of the Venezuelan Embassy in Buenos Aires to pay their respects to Hugo Chavez who died on Tuesday afternoon after a two-year struggle with cancer.
President Cristina Fernandez suspended all her activities and declared a three-day national mourning after the announcement of the Venezuelan leaders death. Both President Fernandez and her late husband, ex president Nestor Kirchner, were close friends with Hugo Chavez. Cristina Fernandez and some members of her cabinet are expected to arrive to Caracas on Wednesdsay for the official State ceremony.
Since 2005, Venezuelan and Argentinan relations have closened with both governments opposed the ALCA, the free trade alliance backed by the White House and opted instead to strengthen the Mercosur, the South American common market initiative. By 2009, Caracas had become Buenos Aires's main partner in bilateral agreements.
