Netherlands: Catnap on the canal
In Amsterdam, tourists flock to see the floating animal shelter called the Cat Boat. For nearly fifty years, the Cat Boat has been home to strays, sick and abused cats, and felines abandoned by their owners.
The Cat Boat began through the compassion of one woman, Henrietta van Weelde, who started taking in strays in 1966. Soon after, Henrietta had so many cats in her home, she purchased a small skiff. Visitors began arriving to gawk, followed by those interested in adoption, until the organisation formally registered as a charity in 1987.
Currently, six volunteers help maintain the organisation and take care of 30 feline tenants.
