USA: CIA leaker parties hard before prison term
A former Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) agent sentenced to jail for whistle-blowing enjoyed a lavish $20,000 farewell party in Washington, thrown by peace group Code Pink and activist and heiress Naomi Pitcairn.
John Kiriakou will begin a 30-month prison sentence in March for revealing information to journalists about interrogation tactics such as waterboarding used by the American government. He pleaded guilty to a single count of disclosing a covert operative's name, which is a federal crime.
The father of five, whose wife also resigned from the CIA last year, said: "The tendency I think is to feel alone when you're being prosecuted and the whole weight of the government is coming down on your shoulders."
