At the Freie Universitaet animal hospital in Berlin, healthy dogs are helping out their less fortunate brethren with blood donations for use during surgery.

A donor animal must weigh at least 20kg and feel comfortable in the clinical environment. In the procedure, the doctor takes 10ml of blood per kilo.

According to the doctor, after the donation the dog should rest and eat a cup of chicken soup, which should restore his energy. As a reward the donor receives a good feed and a pat on the head. Cat blood donors are also welcome.
