Ceremony inaugurates autonomous 'Mayflower' ship on 400-year anniv. of namesake's first trip

United Kingdom, Plymouth

The official ceremony to inaugurate the Mayflower Autonomous Ship (MAS), one of the world’s first fully autonomous ships, takes place in Plymouth on Wednesday September 16 and will mark the 400-year anniversary of the trip of the first Mayflower.

The autonomous ship, decked out with solar panels, as well as diesel and wind turbines to provide it with its propulsion power will make its voyage on a similar route and invoke the pioneering spirit of the 1620 Mayflower by using artificial intelligence to chart its own course from Plymouth, England, to Plymouth, Mass in the US.

If successful, it will be one of the first self-navigating, full-sized vessels to cross the Atlantic Ocean.

Created by a global consortium of partners including IBM and led by the nonprofit research organization ProMare, the Mayflower Autonomous Ship, or MAS, will make use of artificial intelligence and energy from the sun.
