Moscow appreciates Beijing's balanced position on the Ukrainian crisis, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated during a bilateral meeting with China's leader Xi Jinping on Thursday in Samarkand on the sidelines of the SCO summit.

According to Putin, Moscow and Beijing play a key role in ensuring global and regional security.

"We jointly advocate the formation of a just, democratic and multipolar world order based on international law and the central role of the UN, rather than on some rules that someone has invented and is trying to impose on others without even explaining what it is", he said.

In his turn, Xi Jinping expressed readiness to assist Russia in matters of security.

"In the face of the tremendous changes of our time on a global scale, unprecedented in history, we stand ready with our Russian colleagues to set an example of responsible global power and play a leadership role to put such a rapidly changing world on a path of sustainable and positive development", the Chinese President added.

Uzbekistan's Foreign Ministry said the SCO meeting will be attended by 15 heads of state, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, as well as the leaders of Belarus, Turkey and other observer states and dialogue partners of the organization.

Uzbek presidential spokesperson Sherzod Asadov wrote on his Telegram channel last Thursday that the event would be the first face-to-face meeting of SCO leaders since 2019.

The SCO 2022 summit is held in Samarkand from September 15-16. Founded in Shanghai in 2001, the organisation focuses on political, economic and security issues.
