Nagorno-Karabakh: Volunteers rescue pets before leaving region to Azeri
Volunteers from the 'Dingo team' organisation have been rounding up animals before the Azeri settle in the Kalbajar region.
Footage shows volunteers taking care of cats and dogs and putting them into transport cages. The animals were abandoned after people left their homes following the conflict.
According to one of the activists, volunteers do not expect the Azeri population to move to the territory fast enough to feed the animals, who they fear will starve.
In the near future, pets will be transported to Armenia, placed in shelters and get vaccinated. After that, volunteers will look for new families for them.
Following weeks of hostilities, Armenia and Azerbaijan signed a Russian-brokered deal to end fighting over the Nagorno-Karabakh region on November 9.
Under the terms of the deal, 1,960 Russian peacekeepers will be deployed in the disputed region to monitor the ceasefire.
The agreement also sees Azerbaijan obtaining control of the territory taken in the most recent fighting, and Armenia relinquishing control of further areas held since the Nagorno-Karabakh war in the 1990s.
