Honduras: Two soldiers killed in confrontation over farmer eviction
Two soldiers were killed and one was left wounded after confrontations with farmers occupying part of a road in the Honduran village of Guapinol escalated on Tuesday, the Honduran Army confirmed.
Footage shows an injured soldier being rushed by police to a hospital in Guapinol, around 220 km (137 miles) north-east of Tegucigalpa.
According to the Honduran Army, the soldiers were accompanying a police squad equipped with a judicial order to evict farmers who had reportedly occupied a section of the road for more than four months in protest against the establishment of a mining company in the area.
Farmer groups from the Colon department say that a mining company would pollute the Guapinol river, from which many families allegedly get water for daily activities and to water crops.
