UK: Shadow Chancellor McDonnell joins protest against airport expansion

Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer John McDonnell joined protesters outside the Royal Courts of Justice as an appeal is heard over whether a third runway should be built at London's Heathrow Airport.

McDonnell said that up to 10,000 people may lose their homes if the expansion goes ahead.

"We believe the proposals will have an impact on not just our community, on air pollution and noise right across London, and also the government will fail to meet its climate change targets," he said.

The debate over the construction of a third runway at Heathrow has raged for years, with detractors claiming it would negatively impact residents in the airport's vicinity as well as the environment, while others say it would boost the UK's economy and efficiency.
