
Iraq: US Army says ISIS ‘losing grip’ on Raqqa but not abolished
The US Military announced in Baghdad on Tuesday that the occupation of Raqqa in neighbouring Syria by the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS/ISIL) is nearing its end, but pockets of fighters remain.
Speaking at a press conference, Col. Ryan S. Dillon, Spokesman for Combined Joint Task Force - Operation Inherent Resolve, U.S. Central Command said: “We are aware of the reports that ISIS has been defeated in Raqqa however, clearance operations continue and Syrian democratic force partners to hit pockets of resistance as the final parts of the city is cleared.”
Col. Dillon also spoke of Russian-US talks and the rise in tensions in Kirkuk.
