Syria: Classes resume at newly opened school in eastern Aleppo
Another school in eastern Aleppo reopened its doors following repair work, as shown by footage released on Wednesday.
Many pupils resumed their studies after almost six years of war, with some starting their education from scratch as they lacked the opportunity to begin their schooling during the war. Neighbouring schools also reportedly underwent repairs.
The UN released a report earlier this year, stating that thousands of schools in Syria have been damaged, destroyed or converted into shelters since 2011. Prior to the war, there were some 1.3 million school children in Aleppo province. However, since the onset of the conflict, the number of children attending school has drastically decreased, leaving many schools underused.
The Syrian government announced that it had liberated the whole of eastern Aleppo on December 22.
