
Germany: Newly elected President Steinmeier calls upon Germans to be courageous
Former foreign minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier was elected German Federal President, in Berlin, on Sunday, receiving 931 out of possible 1230 votes, succeeding Joachim Gauck. Upon his election Steinmeier addressed the German National Assembly.
Steinmeier who was the candidate for the Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU) and Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) attained around 75 percent of the vote, from the Federal Assembly which includes members of the federal parliament and special delegates from Germany's 16 states,
In his address Steinmeier thanked the Federal Assembly, paying special tribute to his predecessor. He stressed, "We live in stormy times and many are insecure" and the question is now "What is the glue that holds our society together?" Adding, "Let us be courageous, then I am not worried about the future."
