Austria: Constitutional court annuls presidential election result
Austria's Constitutional Court overturned the result of May's presidential election, in which former Green party leader Alexander Van der Bellen narrowly defeated Norbert Hofer of the Freedom Party (FPO), in Vienna on Friday.
Announcing the verdict, the court's president Gerhart Holzinger declared the run-off vote unconstitutional after an investigation found irregularities in the counting process in 94 out of 117 constituencies, affecting a total of 77,926 votes, according to the court. "Non-judically speaking this means that the run-off vote is to be repeated entirely," Holzinger stated.
The decision comes one week before Van der Bellen was set to be sworn into office on Friday 8.
On May 22, Alexander Van der Bellen narrowly won the Austrian presidential election with a margin of 30,863 votes.
