Serbia: Miksaliste refugee centre forced to close indefinitely
"We are from Afghanistan and we want to go to Germany. We escaped from house because we are against .. and because of death, we are four months as we are on the way."
The Miksaliste refugee aid distribution centre has announced that it will be forced to cease operations indefinitely from July 1, if conditions for normal operations are not met, in Belgrade on Thursday.
More than 500 refugees have been arriving daily to the refugee centre to gain access to aid. This number greatly exceeds the capabilities and capacities of the facility.
Miksaliste is partially financed through a parent organization that can no longer afford the financial strain and security risks which the centre presents. An additional problem is reportedly posed by the discontent of tenants and owners of commercial buildings in the area around the aid centre.
The parent organisation, Mikser, announced that it will turn for help to the Commissariat for Refugees of the Republic of Serbia, as well as UNHCR, the city of Belgrade and other organisations.
