Turkey: Petrol bombs hurled at police vehicles in Istanbul clashes
State security forces clashed with protesters reportedly affiliated with the Revolutionary People's Liberation Party (DHKP-C) in the Gazi neighbourhood of Istanbul, early on Friday morning. Police used tear gas and water cannon while protesters hurled petrol bombs at vehicles of the state security forces.
The DHKP-C is a Marxist-Leninist party formed in 1978. It is classified as a terrorist organisation by Turkey, the European Union and the United States.
The group has carried out a series of attacks on state institutions in recent years, including a rocket attack on the General Directorate of Security and an assault on the offices of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP). The group also claimed responsibility for an attack on the US consulate in Istanbul on August 10, 2015.
