France: Arrests made as clashes erupt during student protest in Paris
Clashes erupted after hundreds of students took to the streets of Paris, Thursday, to denounce labour reforms proposed by the French government. At least three protesters were arrested and local media reports that two police officers were injured during the demonstration.
The students gathered on the Place de la Republique before marching towards Place d'Italie. Protesters lit flares, threw smoke grenades and vandalised shop and bank facades. Police fired tear gas at the students in an attempt to disperse the crowds.
The students are protesting against labour law reforms put forward by French Labour Minister Myriam El Khomri. The proposed reforms include cutting overtime pay for work beyond 35 hours and cutting the overtime bonus from 25 percent to 10 percent. Protests were held in several cities across France including Marseilles and Rennes and an online petition condemning the reforms has been signed by more than one million people.
