Bulgaria: Sofia celebrates canonization of newest Russian saint
A religious procession wound its way through the streets of Sofia on Thursday evening, to celebrate the canonization of Archbishop Seraphim Sobolev. Both Russian and Bulgarian religious figures attended the celebrations.
Sobolev was a Russian Orthodox religious figure who lived and served in Bulgaria from 1921 to 1950. As the former patron of Sofia’s “St Nicholas” church, Thursday’s procession to celebrate Sobolev’s canonization started and concluded at this building in the centre of Sofia.
This canonization, announced in December 2015, will be the first time that the Bulgarian and Russian churches canonise a saint together.
