
Russia: Meet Evgeny Kovalnogikh - the powerlifter born with no hands
Russian sportsperson and powerlifter Evgeny Kovalnogikh expressed his hopes of taking part in a powerlifting competition at the federal level, to compete for a medal despite the fact that he was born with no hands, in the city of Kirov, Sunday.
The 22-year-old disabled sportsman, who currently takes part in regional level competitions, is currently fundraising for a modern biomechanical prosthesis, that will help him feel "the full capacity." Such prosthesis work on the sensors that transfer signals coming from the brain, with the prostheses then converting those signals into a corresponding mechanical movements.
Evgeny Kovalnogikh explained that powerlifting consists of three lifts, the deadlift, bench press and squat. However the sportsman is only capable of attempting the maximal weight in the squats exercise, adding that "I would like to try myself there. If I succeed I would like to fight for a medal."
The sportsman described powerlifting as one of the "manlike sports where the male character is shown" because "each time you come into the gym and force yourself to overcome your difficulties."
