UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s office responded to criticism over leaving Israel off the UN’s latest blacklist of parties that kill or injure children in armed conflicts during a press conference in New York, Monday.
Stephane Dujarric, Spokesperson for UN Secretary-General stated that Ban Ki-moon had brought to light the number of children that were killed in Gaza last year, as well as the 4,249 Palestinian children injured in the six week onslaught that saw the death of 2,220 Palestinians, 1,492 of them civilians. Stating that the UN figures were “there for everyone to read in black and white,” Ban’s reporting of the figures could “leave no question as to what the secretary general's position is … on this very subject."
Ban’s spokesperson went on to say the major aims of the report were to increase accountability by presenting “violations of international law, international humanitarian law and bring light to the plight of children in armed conflict." The list of children's rights violators appears just two months after a UN inquiry discovered Israeli Defense Forces planned and carried out several strikes on makeshift refugee shelters in UN schools during 2014’s Operation Protective Edge.
