The Kazakh and Russian presidents struck a note of caution concerning the economic outlook for both countries after meeting in Astana on Friday, but expressed confidence that their difficulties can be overcome.

President Vladimir Putin expressed his confidence that Russia and Kazakhstan can counter the current economic crisis through cooperation but noted that the situation remains “very uneasy.” He also praised his counterpart’s positive “direct involvement in Kazakhstan and the whole post-Soviet space."

Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev said that the Eurasian Economic Union faces a major challenge in the form of falling export prices.

Putin and Nazarbayev concurred that both Moscow and Astana must cooperate closely to overcome any difficulties.
